The John Carroll Resource Center (JCRC or Carroll Center) at Holy Spirit Prep provides support to students in grades K-8 who have been diagnosed with dyslexia or other language processing exceptionalities, and/or organizational challenges, to maximize the student’s unique learning potential within a college preparatory environment. The JCRC staff, classroom teachers, parents and students work in partnership toward the common goal of academic independence for the student. Dedicated teachers provide students with individualized and group support to enhance their academic success. The JCRC utilizes programs that include the multi-sensory Orton Gillingham approach, S.P.I.R.E., Reading with Meaning, Making Connections and Handwriting Without Tears.

Full Resource Program
Benchmarks, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences are provided three times a year to track each student’s growth. Enhanced weekly communication with parents serves to close the loop between school and home. Students enrolled in the JCRC full resource program receive in-class assistance, one-on-one or small-group tutoring, small-group test administration, study and organizational skills training, and homework tutorial. An Individualized Resource Plan (IRP) is prepared for each student enrolled in the JCRC's full resource program, with the purpose of outlining the support needed to maximize the student’s strengths and overcome or accommodate any learning challenges.
JCRC students in the full resource program spend the majority of the school day participating in mainstream classes. Students in grades 3 to 5 attend small-group, grade-level language arts classes in the Center that focus on developing the student’s reading and writing skills. Sixth to eighth grade students receive the majority of their support in the form of in-class assistance from the classroom and resource teachers, as these students prepare to make the transition to High School.
Partial Resource Program
Students enrolled in the JCRC partial resource program are able to independently meet classroom demands, yet benefit from one-on-one or small-group tutoring, small-group test administration, study and organizational skills training, and homework tutorial. An IRP is prepared for each student enrolled in the partial program. In addition, academic benchmarks, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences are provided to track each student’s growth. Enhanced weekly communication serves to close the loop between school and home.
Reading Enhancement Program
The Reading Enhancement Program (REP) serves the needs of students who would benefit from additional support in the areas of spelling, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Small-group, multi-sensory instruction is provided daily to students in grades 1-4. Enrollment is based upon teacher referrals, standardized testing results, and classroom benchmark performance assessments. Instruction is provided in a small-group setting during general classroom reading time, and parents receive weekly summaries of their student's progress. A parent-teacher conference is held at the end of the semester to determine if continued enrollment would be beneficial to the student.
Emerging Readers Program
The Emerging Readers Program serves our kindergarten students needing early literacy support. The program focuses on phonemic awareness and language skills using multi-sensory instruction. Mastery of these skills leads to greater confidence and love for learning. The small group meets daily during the kindergarten reading block. Enrollment is based upon teacher referrals, testing results, and classroom benchmark performance assessments.
Enrollment in the John Carroll Resource Center requires current psycho-educational testing (and, if appropriate, other testing reports) and supplemental tuition. The testing must document a need the Center is equipped to meet.
