Please see the following letter from Michelle Bertany that was sent to the HSP Community today, regarding the 2022-2023 Annual Fund Kick-off!
Dear Holy Spirit Prep Family, It is hard to believe we are already one month into the new academic year. During the challenging circumstances of the pandemic that we continue to face, our Holy Spirit Prep community has continued to thrive, remaining faithful to the original mission of Holy Spirit Preparatory School - developing a communion of joyful souls dedicated to Catholic discipleship in holistic, classically-inspired education. As of today, Holy Spirit Prep’s 2022-2023 Annual Fund campaign is officially underway! The Annual Fund is our primary annual fundraising effort. If you have not already done so, please watch this beautiful message from Amanda and Rick Kuhlman, our 2022 - 2023 Annual Fund Chairs. Help us continue to improve, grow, and thrive. The Catholic Church has historically emphasized the critical role of parents, and the family in the process of educating the faithful. HSP strives to provide financial aid opportunities to qualified Catholic students who do not have the means to attend. This need-based approach is an effort to provide the highest quality Catholic education to entire families and to recognize the Church’s twin missions of teaching and evangelization. The economic realities relating to the cost of providing this type of education mandate a robust fundraising program and a commitment to proper stewardship of all the resources of the school. Without a community commitment to fundraising, it would be difficult for Holy Spirit Prep to survive as an institution supporting the family. Contributions to the Annual Fund demonstrate the community’s commitment to the proper formation of our children—and allow Holy Spirit Prep to maintain the highest quality Catholic education. We respectfully request every HSP family to participate in the 2022-23 Annual Fund to the best of their ability. Jesus taught us how. “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” Proverbs 11:2 Over the next few weeks, you will receive regular updates and reminders about the Annual Fund. We encourage you to read these messages and reach out to our Director of Advancement, Edward Festa efesta@holyspiritprep.org with any questions. Many employers sponsor matching gift programs for charitable contributions made by their employees. Check if your company has a matching gift policy. The impact of your gift to Holy Spirit Prep could be doubled. Please support the 2022-23 Annual Fund at any one of the following Giving Levels by October 7, 2022. We are all called to make our best gift.
You may notice we added a new giving level, St. Joseph Calasanz. St. Joseph Calasanz dedicated his life to the education of poor and neglected children, including numerous schools where poor children could attend for free. I offer you my sincerest thanks for your support. God bless you and your wonderful families!
In Christ, Michelle Bertany
The Poor Widow’s Contribution. He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.” Mark 12: 41-44

Elle Overholt will be hosting a Resume Building Workshop for our 11th and 12th grade students during Life Dynamics on 9/15.
She is a career development expert specializing in young talent. Her company, Forth, was born from a determination to make the transition from college to career less challenging.
A natural overachiever, Elle landed a job at a top consulting firm immediately after graduating from Georgia Tech Business School in 2015. But, like so many young graduates, she initially struggled to navigate her experience in the workplace.
In 2018, Elle set forth on her mission to teach talented students how to hone in on their skill set, advocate for themselves in the job search, and start their careers in a role that embraces their strengths. Since then, Elle has worked with thousands of students at Louisiana State University and interns at the Baton Rouge Area Chamber. She’s been the keynote speaker at the Mississippi and Louisiana Association of Colleges and Employers. She’s coached Shell Chemical Plant employees on resumes and interviewing. She’s partnered with Chick-fil-A’s Training Development Program in Atlanta, helping employees apply for roles internally. She has also been the Hiring Director for Break Into Business, an Atlanta non-profit helping young people launch new businesses.
We are so excited to have her! For more information, check out her website: https://goforthllc.com/
Fr. Juan Pablo Duran will be blessing all of the HSP vehicles in the Upper School parking lot on Wednesday, September 13th, and Thursday, September 14th at 3:30pm right after school.
Over the past few weeks, we have hosted a handful of colleges on our Upper School campus to give our students the opportunities to network and learn more about what each has to offer. We have over 20 already scheduled, and the list is growing!
All Upper School students are welcome to join Bible studies starting over the next few weeks during Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday lunchtime depending on gender and grade. We will have separate studies for young men and women and varied grades.
If students are interested, please fill out this form: Bible Study Interest Form 22-23
Reminder that all high school students are required to serve and log 25 hours by April 21, 2023. The Service Hours Form can be found on the website and is linked here.
Please turn in complete forms in the folder to the left of the Campus Ministry white board outside of Fr. JP’s office.
Ideas of service opportunities will be posted to the website and Green and Gold over the coming weeks, but students are welcome to talk to Ms. Athaide about any other service work they do or would like to do.
All 11th-grade parents are invited to an info session on the College Counseling process and expectations for the junior class over the next 2 years.
Please join us in Malta Hall on October 26th from 6:00-7:30 PM. More details will be sent in the coming weeks.
See you there!
About 20 juniors and seniors joined Ms. Athaide this past weekend at the WWKM College Fair at the Cobb Galleria. Over 180 colleges and universities were in attendance, and the students had a great time meeting college reps. They also learned about colleges they’ve never heard of– and now might apply to! While the students browsed the fair, some parents attended an optional Affording College parent session.
Please enjoy some pictures from the event!
Please feel free to contact meet@uga.edu if you have any questions regarding these events or logistics on how the virtual events work. See dates and sign up here: http://www.peachstatetour.org/students.html

Symphony No. 8 in C Minor - by Anton Bruckner
Anton Bruckner
Born September 4, 1824 Ansfelden, Austria
Died October 11, 1896 Vienna, Austria
Anton Bruckner was an Austrian composer, organist, and music theorist best known for his symphonies, Masses, Te Deum and motets. His symphonies are considered emblematic of the final stage of Austro-German Romanticism because of their rich harmonic language, strongly polyphonic character, and considerable length. Bruckner's compositions helped to define contemporary musical radicalism, owing to their dissonances, unprepared modulations, and roving harmonies.
Unlike other musical radicals such as Richard Wagner and Hugo Wolf, Bruckner showed extreme humility before other musicians, Wagner in particular. Bruckner was critical of his own work and often reworked his compositions. There are several versions of many of his works.
Bruckner, a Catholic, was a devoutly religious man, and composed numerous sacred works. He wrote a Te Deum, five psalm settings, a Festive cantata, a Magnificat, about forty motets, and at least seven Masses.
Symphony No. 8 in C minor is the last symphony the composer completed. It exists in two major versions, 1887 and 1890, the latter of which was premiered under conductor Hans Richter in 1892 at the Musikverein, Vienna. It is dedicated to the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria.
This symphony is sometimes nicknamed The Apocalyptic, however, this was not a name Bruckner gave to the work himself. In the BBC Music magazine article "The 20 Greatest Symphonies of All Time" Bruckner’s 8th Symphony is ranked at number 13. He also holds 20th place with his Symphony No. 7.
The 8th Symphony has four movements. Total duration varies by performance and the edition of the score used, but is typically around 80 minutes.
Recommended Recording: Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 in C Minor - Berlin Philharmonic, Lorin Maazel (Warner Classics)
Listen on Apple Music Listen on Spotify
Further Listening: Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 - Vienna Philharmonic, Herbert von Karajan (Deutsche Grammophon)
Many people wonder why music is such an important part of a classical education.
It is because music helps us to learn by improving cognitive function, helping our brains work effectively, and helps us solve complex problems, just to name a few of the benefits.
Please click the link below for a short article by Dr. Anita Collins, explaining all of the positive effects of music education on brain development.
Music Education and Brain Development
HSP is happy to continue their association with the Ascension Music Academy to offer music lessons on both our campuses.
Performing music every day has a direct correlation to higher test scores, aptitude, and critical thinking skills. Numerous studies show that students who perform in their school performing ensembles daily score from 200-500 points higher on the SAT, depending on their level of musical advancement. Students at the All-State Level score closer to 500 mark. Almost every All-State student takes private lessons. There is no better way to master your instrument than to receive one on one instruction.
If you are interested in registering for the fall semester, please fill out this form and return it, with payment, to either school’s front desk. Please contact our Fine Arts Director, Len Insalaca (Linsalaca@holyspiritprep.org), if you have any questions or would like more information.
All 10th-grade parents are invited for an information session on the Sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday, September 20th from 6:30-8:00 PM.
Please fill out this form in advance so we can understand a bit more about your intentions: Confirmation Parent Interest 22-23. Please join us to learn more about the options of getting confirmed at HSP, your parish, the retreat date, necessary forms, due dates, and Sacramental Records.
If your child is in 11th or 12th grade and has not been confirmed in the Catholic Church but is interested, please fill out the form and Campus Ministry will be in touch with you.
Dear Families,
We are continuing our virtue series at the Lower School this September. Groups of Middle Schoolers have been very helpful in preparing presentations for the lower school students on the virtue of the month. I wanted to share a few reflections about this month’s virtue – Faith.
The common notion of faith in our world today is that if something doesn’t make sense, and we are told it is true, we need to just blindly accept it. This is a false notion of Faith. Faith should go hand in hand with reason. God doesn’t ask us to reject our reason and intellect to reflect on Him. That would be, in a sense, improper to our nature, and God wouldn’t ask us to do something that we were not made to do.
It is proper to reason to trust people’s testimony. We do this all the time. Someone tells me that Antarctica exists, I have never been there, but I believe. Someone tells me that there are other galaxies out there, but there is no way for me to confirm them. I trust them. Someone tells me that the speed of light = mc2. I can’t measure it, but I trust that this is true. We also trust human testimony for historical events that happened. It is very natural for us to trust other people’s testimony, but for some reason, we find it much harder to believe or trust God’s testimony that He would stay with us in the Eucharist or that the morality He asks of us is the best way of life.
Not only is the act of faith rational, but also our Faith as a whole is rational. What we believe makes sense. The Trinity, Christ’s two natures, and the Eucharist are all mysteries that we trust the author of (God), and the internal principles that make them up are coherent and understandable. Our Theology uses philosophical principles to help us understand our faith. And philosophy finds its fulfillment in Theology and faith.
God gives us our intellect to help us believe, and He gives us Faith to help us understand. We use our intellect to discover the Truth, and Faith explains the Truth to us. The greatest Truth leads us to a discovery of the meaning of our lives. Why do we exist? What are we here for? The answers to these questions can never be found just with a scientific, biological, and temporal meaning. If the answer stayed in the temporal and material world, every answer we find would leave us hanging and asking isn’t there something more?
The answers to these fundamental questions can truly only be understood with faith. We find the meaning of our life when we accept the mystery of Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Our life can find meaning when we look back over our life hand in hand with Christ from His Tomb, who has conquered sin and opened again the doors of eternal life. His Paschal mystery is the true interpreter of our lives.
Faith helps us complete the whole story. The meaning we try to give will always be incomplete, like a movie that leaves you hanging with many unanswered questions.
The Prophet Isaiah told King Ahaz that, “if your faith is not firm, you will not be firm” (Is 7:9). The Author of the book of Hebrews can help us interpret this line, “Faith is the realization of things hoped for, and the evidence of things unseen” (Heb 11:1). If we look at these two celebrated lines from Scripture together, we find that Faith is a rock. Isaiah tells King Ahaz he will be strong if his faith is strong and the author of the letter to the Hebrews, compares faith to realization and evidence. Both reference solidity. Our faith isn’t about vague abstract concepts that have nothing to do with our lives, rather we believe in a person, someone with whom we can build a relationship, and this gives solidity to our lives. He is our Savior, Redeemer, Merciful Father, and Just Judge. Knowing that there is such a loving Father and good friend we are invited to accept this mercy now and live a life worthy of the name, Christian. “Christian, recognize your dignity and, know that you share in God's own nature, do not return to your former base condition by sinning. Remember who is your head and of whose body you are a member. Never forget that you have been rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the light of the Kingdom of God.” (St Leo the Great)
In short, our Faith is the foundation of our life, the rock we build it on. Build on solid ground and we will be strong.
God Bless!
Fr Andrew, LC

Prudence: - "unselfishly giving to others what they need"
Prudence is a cardinal virtue: one of the four pivotal virtues.
Catechism of the Catholic Church: “Prudence is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern (discovering God’s will) our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it; ‘the prudent man looks where he is going.’ Prudence is ‘right reason in action,’ writes Saint Thomas Aquinas, following Aristotle. It is not to be confused with timidity or fear, nor with duplicity or dissimulation. It is called the charioteer of the virtues; it guides the other virtues by setting rule and measure. It is prudence that immediately guides the judgment of conscience. The prudent man determines and directs his conduct in accordance with this judgment. With the help of this virtue we apply moral principles to particular cases without error and overcome doubts about the good to achieve and the evil to avoid” (CCC 1806).
"Prudence is concerned with the quest of truth, and fills us with the desire of fuller knowledge.” - St. Ambrose ”
