We are proud to highlight that HSP senior, Mariana Munoz, was highlighted in the Atlanta's InTown Magazine article, "20 Under 20: Honoring students who give back to the community". She was an honoree due to her generous and impressive work for her Girl Scout Gold Award project. Please see article message and full article link below!

Mariana Munoz, 17 Holy Spirit Preparatory School
"As part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Caring for Caregivers, Mariana organized a donation drive to support the caregivers of pregnant, incarcerated women in Georgia prisons. The senior partnered with the nonprofit Motherhood Beyond Bars, organized a collection of baby items through an Amazon wish list, and encouraged HSPS parents and faculty to donate. Within a month, she collected over 500 baby items, from cribs, diapers, formula, wipes, clothing, toys, and more. Mariana said she received a photo of a father holding one of the care kits collected during her project. “I smiled ear to ear and realized that because I was determined to help, made a difference in a family’s life. That feeling is one of the greatest and unforgettable,” she said."

As we start a brand new year, we want to express our sincere appreciation for all who generously support Holy Spirit Prep through gifts of time, talent and funding in 2022. The generosity of this community enables us to continue our mission to form all students into joyful, courageous young women and men, prepared for a lifetime of faithful happiness.
We continued the use of FACTSGiving as our technology resource for giving. All donations to the 2022-23 Annual Fund as well as memberships to Arts Alliance and the Athletic Booster Club were logged in this system either through online donation or manual transactions by our team (for check, stock and cash gifts). Tax letters for these donations will be issued via email through FACTSGiving during the week of January 22, 2023. Please be on the lookout for this email and download your tax receipt directly.
If you would like to request a hard copy mailing of your tax receipt, or if you have any questions or concerns, please direct these to Maria Kichler (mkichler@holyspritiprep.org)
Again, we are so grateful for the support throughout this school year! We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Gala!
Dear Holy Spirit Prep Family, It is hard to believe we are already one month into the new academic year. During the challenging circumstances of the pandemic that we continue to face, our Holy Spirit Prep community has continued to thrive, remaining faithful to the original mission of Holy Spirit Preparatory School - developing a communion of joyful souls dedicated to Catholic discipleship in holistic, classically-inspired education. As of today, Holy Spirit Prep’s 2022-2023 Annual Fund campaign is officially underway! The Annual Fund is our primary annual fundraising effort. If you have not already done so, please watch this beautiful message from Amanda and Rick Kuhlman, our 2022 - 2023 Annual Fund Chairs. Help us continue to improve, grow, and thrive. The Catholic Church has historically emphasized the critical role of parents, and the family in the process of educating the faithful. HSP strives to provide financial aid opportunities to qualified Catholic students who do not have the means to attend. This need-based approach is an effort to provide the highest quality Catholic education to entire families and to recognize the Church’s twin missions of teaching and evangelization. The economic realities relating to the cost of providing this type of education mandate a robust fundraising program and a commitment to proper stewardship of all the resources of the school. Without a community commitment to fundraising, it would be difficult for Holy Spirit Prep to survive as an institution supporting the family. Contributions to the Annual Fund demonstrate the community’s commitment to the proper formation of our children—and allow Holy Spirit Prep to maintain the highest quality Catholic education. We respectfully request every HSP family to participate in the 2022-23 Annual Fund to the best of their ability. Jesus taught us how. “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” Proverbs 11:2 Over the next few weeks, you will receive regular updates and reminders about the Annual Fund. We encourage you to read these messages and reach out to our Director of Advancement, Edward Festa efesta@holyspiritprep.org with any questions. Many employers sponsor matching gift programs for charitable contributions made by their employees. Check if your company has a matching gift policy. The impact of your gift to Holy Spirit Prep could be doubled. Please support the 2022-23 Annual Fund at any one of the following Giving Levels by October 7, 2022. We are all called to make our best gift.
You may notice we added a new giving level, St. Joseph Calasanz. St. Joseph Calasanz dedicated his life to the education of poor and neglected children, including numerous schools where poor children could attend for free. I offer you my sincerest thanks for your support. God bless you and your wonderful families!
In Christ, Michelle Bertany
The Poor Widow’s Contribution. He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.” Mark 12: 41-44

Once again our wonderful missionaries, Louis, Nathan, and Elias are meeting with the 11th grade boys on Thursdays during lunch at 10:45 AM.
They would love to provide the boys with some extra "incentive" to join them at this meetings. In the past, parents have just placed a delivery order for food to arrive around this time at the school. If you are able to order pizza and/or snacks for the boys during one of these meetings, your generosity is greatly appreciated!
For planning purposes, you may count on 10-15 boys.

Roman Trilogy - by Ottorino Respighi
Ottorino Respighi
Born July 9, 1879 Bologna Italy
Died April 18, 1936 Rome, Italy
Ottorino Respighi was an Italian composer who vigorously championed his country’s musical heritage. Early in his composing career he did a series of transcriptions and arrangements of music from the 17th and 18th centuries. Influenced by this early music, Respighi became popular for his tone poems Fountains of Rome (1916). Pines of Rome (1924) and Roman Festivals (1928).
Respighi is one of the most popular and beloved Italian composers of the 20th century.
Fountains of Rome is a tone poem in four movements completed in 1916. It is the first of his three tone poems about Rome, preceding Pines of Rome (1924) and Roman Festivals (1928). Each movement depicts a setting at one of Rome's fountains at a different time of the day, specifically the Valle Giulia, Triton, Trevi, and Villa Medici.
Fountains of Rome
Pines of Rome is the second of his three tone poems about Rome. Each movement depicts a setting in the city with pine trees, specifically those in the Villa Borghese gardens, near a catacomb, on the Janiculum Hill, and along the Appian Way.
Pines of Rome
Roman Festivals is the last of his three tone poems about Rome. Each movement depicts a scene of celebration in ancient and contemporary Rome, specifically gladiators battling to the death, the Christian Jubilee, a harvest and hunt festival, and a festival in the Piazza Navona. Musically, the piece is the longest and most demanding of Respighi's Roman trilogy.

Congratulations to three HSP band students who have successfully auditioned for the Georgia Music Educators Association District V Honor Bands. The audition process consisted of memorized major scales and arpeggios and chromatic scale, a prepared lyrical etude, and a short sight-reading exercise. This process is highly competitive because our students compete against students from every other middle and high school in Fulton county regardless of school size. The following students will be representing HSP in their respective honor bands in February:
Luke Sacco, trumpet (7th grade) - Middle School Artistry Band
Suzy Gregory, alto saxophone (10th grade) - 9th & 10th grade Concert Band
Adam Young, tenor saxophone (10th grade) - 9th & 10th grade Concert Band
Adam scored high enough to qualify for the final round to audition into the Georgia All-State Band. He will audition in January on both a prepared lyrical and technical etude, and two difficult sight reading exercises. We wish him many blessings as he competes against the best tenor saxophonists in the state for a coveted chair in the state’s top concert band.

Video on Virtue of the Month: https://youtu.be/96eHppnbqnM
Dear Families in Christ,
Happy New Year! This month we will be focusing on the virtue of Temperance at the Lower School.
Temperance is a cardinal virtue, which means that it is one of the 4 virtues that are pivotal for the formation of all virtues. According to our Catechism, Temperance is the moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods.
One of the greatest dangers that we can suffer from in the world today is the sin of consumerism. We live in a world where there are so many good things. God has given us so much good and things that give us pleasure. The danger that this can provide for us, is that we focus too much on the things that we have and only want more and more of them, taking our gaze off the one true thing that matters.
Maybe we have had the experience of binge-watching our favorite TV program late on a Friday night. Or maybe we could start working just a few extra minutes at the office which ends up being 4 hours. Or maybe we stay on Facebook too long, or Instagram. Or maybe we even dedicate too much time to apparently good things to avoid what we need to do, to fulfill our responsibilities. Or we could find ourselves reacting disproportionally to certain things, getting very angry or very sad, or exuberant.
When we experience some of the imbalance in our life described above, it could be because we are reacting to a feeling to fulfill something pleasurable at that moment. We feel good while we are scrolling on Instagram or feel intrigued with another episode of a tv program, or feel we need to yell and get angry. Sometimes we need to do these things, but temperance helps us know when and where is a good time and place. If these are hindering us from doing our responsibilities or from not doing something good, then we need to ask ourselves if this is the best option right now.
Raffaello Santi, a renowned Italian artist, was asked to paint the Papal apartments in Rome. On one of the walls, he depicted personifications of the virtues and there he painted Temperance as a woman holding reins. These reins are used to control a wild horse. A wild horse could be a great image of our feelings or passions, often they could be totally out of control and need some reining in. If we let our passions go and don’t control them, we could end up like the man who tries to tame a wild horse with no reins, probably very hurt.
We lose sleep, get addicted, or hurt relationships. Temperance is a very necessary virtue for us today to help us create the right balance in a world that is full of so much good. It is also a very hard virtue to teach children, and for us to practice, as we want them, and us, to have so many great experiences of the world. One of my favorite gospel passages is when Jesus is with Martha and Mary and he tells Mary that she has chosen the best part because she has seen the one necessary thing. Jesus is explaining to Martha that she doesn’t need to do it all, but rather to not lose sight of the eternal things during her work. I often think of all the great things in the world and then think how much better it will be in heaven when there is no urgency to have to experience it all right now. Temperance helps us see that all we have in the world is contingent. Whether we write this email, respond angrily to someone who treated me unjustly, watch another episode, eat another doughnut, or you can fill in the blank. God does want us to experience so much good here, but not to lose sight of eternity. Using the things here should help us gaze toward heaven.
God bless! Fr Andrew, LC
